If you're looking for a luxury sedan, there's a good chance you've considered the well-established German brands, but there is an alternative from farther north that is worth your attention. The 2022 Volvo S90 is a tastefully sleek midsize luxury sedan that distinguishes itself from the class with its Scandinavian design, standard driver-assist systems, and excellent crash test scores.
For 2022, the S90 expanded its appeal with a more fuel-efficient mild hybrid base engine and extended EV range from its plug-in hybrid T8 variant. On the inside, a new transferable four-year subscription to Google connected services gives you easier access to your map data, home automation, and other productivity assistants.
The S90 isn't as sporty as some BMW 5 Series, Audi A6, or Mercedes-Benz E-Class models, choosing instead to focus on comfort and refinement. The front seats are some of the most comfortable in the industry, and the interior is appropriately classy and inviting. We'd avoid the larger wheels, though, as they tend to make the ride too bumpy.
Comfortable seats: Volvo enlisted the help of orthopedists to develop seats for its entire lineup, and the investment paid off. The S90's seats are some of the most comfortable in any vehicle thanks to their optimal shape and numerous adjustments. Heated front seats are standard, while heated rear seats and ventilated front seats are optional.
Premium interior: The S90's interior design features clean Scandinavian design and rich, warm materials. The leather upholstery easily meets luxury standards and the open-pore wood trim is as beautiful to the eyes as it is to the touch. The sturdy construction gives the sedan a reassuring solidity, and we even like the Orrefors crystal shift knob for a little flourish.
Plenty of driver aids: All S90 models come with a comprehensive list of driver aids that include frontal collision mitigation, lane keeping assistance, a blind-spot warning, and adaptive cruise control. What you don't see is the engineering underneath that helped it achieve the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's Top Safety Pick+ status in crash testing.
Larger wheels affect ride comfort: As attractive as larger wheels may be to some shoppers, there's a drawback to that visual impact. The larger diameter results in a thinner tire sidewall, which is your first line of defense against road imperfections. For these reasons, we suggest sticking with either the 18- or 19-inch wheels and avoiding the optional 20-inchers.
