The BMW XM was developed by the German automaker’s high-performance M division to serve as the ultimate utility vehicle. The XM is a full-size SUV with seating for five passengers in two rows. To achieve its performance, the XM uses a plug-in hybrid driveline combining a 4.4-liter turbocharged V8 engine with an electric motor, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission with full-time all-wheel drive. But don’t let the hybrid drivetrain distract you—this SUV is a performance vehicle first, not a fuel-sipping SUV.

2023 - 2025

First generation BMW XM

The BMW XM debuted for the 2023 model year with a single trim level and 644 horsepower from its plug-in hybrid drivetrain. The XM is larger than the automaker's X5 midsize SUV but smaller than the three-row X7. For the 2024 model year, BMW added a new Red Label trim that boosts power output to 738 horsepower. The trim name was changed to Label for the 2025 model year.

Inside, the XM offers the same kind of luxurious touches as other high-line BMW models, but it would be a mistake to think this is an SUV designed for comfort. The XM features a very stiff suspension designed for performance driving, and as such it delivers a rougher ride than luxury customers expect. Similarly, although the XM is a plug-in hybrid, don't think of it as a fuel-efficient vehicle. Everything about the XM is designed for performance.
