A next-level hybrid

If you don’t want a hybrid that loudly announces it’s eco-cred, take a look at the 2015 Chevrolet Volt. It blends in with regular cars in traffic, but it quietly switches the gas engine on and off as needed to charge the battery that powers the torque-rich electric motor. It’s hybrid technology in its final form, in a car that is easy to drive anywhere, has the features you want, and lets you “fill up” at home.

All Chevrolet Volt years

5 reasons to buy the 2015 Chevrolet Volt

1. Pleasant driving demeanor

Hybrids used to be dull to drive. Not anymore. The Volt’s T-shaped battery is below the floorboard and seats, giving it a lower center of gravity than most vehicles on the road. Paired with a well-tuned suspension, this means the Volt hugs corners better than its outward appearance would suggest. The sharp and precise steering, plus instant electric torque make the Volt a fun daily driver.

2. Driving on pocket change

The Chevrolet Volt can plug in and recharge from your average 120V wall outlet, just like your cell phone. With an EPA-estimated electric-only range of 38 miles on a full charge, driving a Volt means you only have to fuel up for longer road trips.

There’s no desperate search for chargers either, as you can stop at any gas station before continuing your trip. The Volt combines the best characteristics of gas and EV.

3. Driver assistance tech

Driver assistance features were optional in 2015, but the Chevrolet Volt still offered several of them. OnStar was standard on every Volt, just in case you happen to lock yourself out or need directions.

Driver assistance options included a rearview camera, front and rear parking sensors, and forward collision and lane-departure warnings. If you want a car that can take some of the stress out of your commute, look for a Volt with these options.

4. Unique appearance

Inside and out, the 2015 Chevrolet Volt takes a sci-fi approach to what could have been just another sedan. Outside, the blocked-off grille is a sure sign of an EV, and the swept and aerodynamic look still looks modern today. Inside, the futuristic theme adds a digital driver display, as well as a center touchscreen. The interior offers all the standard cup holders and charging ports you want, but it looks like it’s from 10 years in the future.

5. 2015 exclusives

This model year Chevrolet Volt offers a few upgrades over previous years. First, the navigation system and premium audio system are now one option. If the 2015 Volt you’re looking at has one, it also has the other. This year, OnStar gained WiFi hotspot capability.

Finally, standard battery storage increased from 16.5 kWh to 17.1, and the Volt gained a new color called Iridescent Pearl Tricoat.
