The Genesis brand is gaining recognition but still lacks the cachet of German and Japanese rivals. But if you can look beyond the badge on the 2020 Genesis G70, you’ll find a genuine luxury sedan with lots of sporty potential. Especially in higher trims, the G70’s cabin is dressed up with top-notch materials and luxurious design touches. If you opt for the V6 engine, you’ll find a car that’s as fun and engaging to drive as any of its competitors. Even better, the Genesis doesn’t rely on a massive options list, so it’s easier to track down the features you want by trim level.
The 2020 G70 has a few weaknesses. The rear legroom is small for the class and the trunk borders on tiny. Also, while much of the interior lives up to the G70’s luxury aspirations, the touchscreen infotainment and driver aid technology are borrowed from Hyundai–they’re very easy to use. Still, they lack the wow factor and depth of features of German rivals.
Sporty sedan: The G70 offers the kind of straightforward fun that’s been harder to find in entry-level luxury cars in recent years. Opt for the V6 to get the most out of the G70’s handling and performance upgrades.
Upscale design: Depending on how it’s optioned, the G70 can make quite an impression, with soft-touch materials, textured plastic, and upgrades like available quilted leather seats. There are a few cheap-feeling plastics around, but they’re unobtrusive.
Simple feature menu: Where German competitors offer long lists of individual options and packages that can make finding the features you want unpredictable, the G70 comes with a handful of trims that bundle lots of upgrades together.
Interior space: The back seat and trunk of the G70 are tight, even by compact-sedan standards. Think more “weekend trip for two” than “grand tour.” Most competitors offer more rear-seat space and more room for cargo.
