The GMC Canyon is a midsize pickup truck that is based on the Chevrolet Colorado, but it uses more premium materials on the inside and features unique exterior styling. The 2023 Canyon marked the debut of its third generation. Highlights of the redesign include a roomier interior, a Google-based operating system, and a new turbocharged 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine. This new powertrain replaced the previous model's V6 and diesel engines.
The Canyon faces stiff competition from the Toyota Tacoma, Ford Ranger, Honda Ridgeline, and even its corporate cousin, the Chevy Colorado. Among other changes for 2023, a new off-road-focused AT4X trim was introduced. It includes features such as 33-inch mud-terrain tires and electronic locking front and rear differentials, plus improved ground clearance and climbing angles compared to the lower Canyon AT4 trim. Other highlights include better driver aids and a more modern-looking interior.
Powerful engine: The new 310-horsepower engine had to replace three other engines and it appears to be a worthy successor. It offers more power and more torque (430 lb-ft) than all of the prior engines. The maximum towing capacity remains strong at 7,700 pounds.
More capable operating system: The GM operating system from the previous Canyon was no slouch, but the new Google-based system feels snappier and more capable and it can be wirelessly connected to Android Auto™ or Apple CarPlay®.
More off-road capable: The addition of the new AT4X model shows that GMC is serious about improving the Canyon's off-road credentials. You'll be able to take your truck farther off the beaten path than ever before.
Limited configurations: One of the perks of buying a truck is the smorgasbord of options and configurations to choose from. While most people will likely buy the crew cab with the 5.5-foot bed, those who need a larger bed or prefer a regular cab will need to look elsewhere. That said, this may change in subsequent years, as GMC may change its mind.
