The Hyundai Tucson Hybrid is a compact SUV that sits in between the smaller Kona and larger Santa Fe. It competes with the hybrid versions of the Ford Escape, Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4. While the Tucson model has been around since 2005, this hybrid variant debuted for the 2022 model year. The Tucson Hybrid's fuel economy differs based on the trim level you choose. The base Blue trim gets an EPA-estimated 38 mpg in mixed driving, while the SEL Convenience and Limited trims get an estimated 37 mpg. Fuel economy figures are based on EPA estimates for when vehicle sold as new. Actual mileage will vary based on things like battery age, vehicle condition and history, driving and charging habits, accessory use, and driving conditions. Battery capacity may decrease with time and use. See fueleconomy.gov for more info.
Key strengths of the Tucson Hybrid include a supple ride, roomy interior, smooth acceleration, and an excellent Bose® audio system. Notable items that may be an issue for some people are the lack of physical buttons for climate and audio, a small center console, and lower fuel economy estimates than some competitors.
Changes were minimal for the 2023, but most notably the wireless charger, Hyundai's digital key, and Smart Cruise Control with Stop & Go became standard features on all trims.
Ride comfort: The Tucson's smooth ride quality is one of the best things about it. We hardly noticed any vibration through the cabin from the road. It floats over all kinds of road surfaces, and it may even feel better than some luxury SUVs. Not only does the Tucson handle bumps without drama, but it also remains composed on winding roads, which is quite an achievement.
Spacious cabin: There's tons of space for passengers and cargo. Headroom, legroom and shoulder room are all near the top for both the front and rear among its competitors. The rear seats can also recline to make your passengers even more comfortable. With the rear seats in place, the Tucson Hybrid has one of the largest cargo areas among its competitors. A low liftover height and flat floor help with loading, plus there are trunk-mounted levers that will fold the second row of seats flat.
Great audio and navigation: Audiophiles will want to seek out the Bose sound system available on upper trims. It provides rich sound and deep bass. The onboard navigation is useful and provides a clear map and route directions. Additionally, the touchscreen itself is large and manages to avoid producing glare issues.
Touch-sensitive buttons: Every so often automakers like to reinvent something that doesn't need fixing. (We're looking at you, BMW, with your nonstick turn stalks.) In this case, the physical buttons for the climate and audio controls were replaced with touch-sensitive virtual buttons. There's not the same feedback you'd get from pressing a physical button. As you feel your way through, it is easy to inadvertently press a different button than the one you intended.
