The adventure-seeking 2023 Jeep Gladiator competes among midsize pickup trucks such as the Chevrolet Colorado, Nissan Frontier, Ford Ranger, and Toyota Tacoma. Yet, the Gladiator is very much its own distinct beast in many ways. How many pickup trucks have extreme rock-crawling ability and let you remove the doors and lower the top? Only the Ford Bronco SUV and Jeep’s own Wrangler come close to matching the Gladiator’s spirit.
For the 2023 model year, Jeep offers the Freedom package on the Sport S trim. It includes rock rails, a winch-capable steel front bumper, LED headlights, leather seating, and black-painted alloys.
The Gladiator is generally fine for driving, though the solid front and rear axles can get the suspension jiggling over imperfect surfaces. The vague steering feel is good for off-road, but around town the constant steering corrections can be tiresome. The standard 285-horsepower V6 gets the Gladiator down the road without any trouble and offers an EPA-estimated 19 mpg combined, while the available 260-hp turbodiesel V6 delivers an EPA-estimated 24 mpg combined score. Fuel economy figures are based on EPA estimates for when vehicle sold as new. Fuel economy may vary for reasons like driving conditions and vehicle history. Unless specified, figures are for vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission. See fueleconomy.gov.
Jeep all-terrain capability: Jeep built its reputation with vehicles that can traverse some of the most grueling terrain. The Gladiator carries on this heritage and can be fitted with a vast array of off-road gear, like rock rails, chunky all-terrain tires, underbody skid plates, winches, and locking front and rear differentials.
Cabin space: The boxy exterior bodes well for passenger space in the first and second row. There is tons of headroom and the view outward is clear and commanding.
Fun-loving design: You have to love a pickup truck that lets you take off the top, remove the doors, and even fold down the windshield. Adventure seekers will love these aspects of the Gladiator, which carry over from the Wrangler SUV.
Not for everyone: The Jeep Gladiator’s unique styling and off-road capability mean that it’s not for everyone. The design and engineering that make it an excellent off-road companion also mean that around town it’s big, bulky, and not particularly comfortable much of the time.
