The Continental, first introduced in the 1930s, is one of the oldest names in Lincoln's history. The latest version is a full-size luxury sedan that sits at the top of the Lincoln passenger car lineup. Changes from the 2018 model year are minimal. However, a special 80th-anniversary edition with custom bodywork and coach doors reminiscent of the 1960s Continental is available in very limited numbers. Aside from the special edition, Lincoln offers the Continental in four trim levels that top out at the Black Label, which comes with a wide range of upscale features. The large sedan features a roomy rear seat and provides a quiet, comfortable ride. Lower trim levels suffer with a lackluster engine and an inferior build quality and feature set that doesn't match that of loaded, non-luxury sedans like the Honda Accord. Upper-level versions with the optional turbocharged V6 engine fare better but still can't match the offerings of other luxury brands like BMW and Mercedes-Benz.
Interior: The Continental boasts a roomy cabin, and while the front seat offers plenty of space, it's the rear seat where this big luxury sedan shines. Rear passengers will find excessive legroom with roominess that rivals larger luxury sedans. The driving position is more upright than in many other vehicles, and with multiple adjustments for the steering wheel and seat, most drivers will find a comfortable position. Long doors provide wide openings for easy access but can make it harder to get in and out in tight spaces.
Driving: Opting for the 400-horsepower turbocharged V6, all-wheel drive, and adaptive suspension make the Continental enjoyable to drive. Acceleration is strong, delivering the big car to 60 mph in just 5.5 seconds, according to the Edmunds road test. Brakes also work well, inspiring confidence when hauling this heavy vehicle to a stop quickly without drama. Steering is a bit numb, but overall the ride is comfortable and the car is easy to drive.
Technology: The Continental uses parent company Ford's SYNC® infotainment system. Voice control works quite well, with prompts appearing on the screen in response to natural voice queries. Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ are standard on all Continentals, and multiple USB ports throughout the cabin keep all devices charged. The big sedan also has a complete set of advanced driver-assist features, including adaptive cruise control, ideal for stop-and-go traffic.
Utility: The Continental is a large sedan, but the trunk space is somewhat smaller than average, making it challenging to fit some bulky items. There are several storage spaces in the cabin, but they can be on the small side, especially the glove box. Larger phones won't quite fit into the designated cellphone cubby.
