The 2015 Porsche Cayman is one of the most desirable sports coupes on the market if your priorities are focused on driving dynamics. The Cayman is one of the most exciting sports cars out there, ensuring you are extremely engaged behind the wheel. It offers a number of engine options, ranging from the base 2.7L six-cylinder with 275 horsepower to the fire-breathing 3.8L six-cylinder producing 385 horsepower in the performance-oriented Cayman GT4. The Cayman offers a variety of trim levels and options to ensure you can find the right fit for your needs in a sports coupe.
1. Mid-engine layout
The Cayman is one of the only sports coupes of this type that offers a mid-engine layout, meaning the engine is mounted directly behind the driver. This provides extremely balanced handling characteristics. As an added perk, the six-cylinder engines spinning directly behind you provide a soundtrack that will make you want to leave the radio turned off. This layout also provides a surprising amount of storage space, with the rear trunk offering 9.7 cu-ft of storage and the bonus frunk providing an additional 5.3 cu-ft.
Porsche provides a variety of engine options in the Cayman, allowing you to decide which potency is right for your needs. While the base 2015 Cayman provides plenty of power from its 2.7L six-cylinder, the S and GTS trims bring a larger 3.4L flat-six engine which produces 325 hp and 340 hp in each trim, respectively. If the larger 3.4L isn’t enough, the range-topping GT4 offers a 3.8L flat-six, which produces 385 horsepower and 309 lb-ft of torque. Porsche estimates that the GT4 can reach 60 mph in just 4.2 seconds, providing plenty of power on tap.
If you prefer to row your own gears, the Cayman is one of the few remaining sports coupes offering a manual as standard. If that's not your style, but Porsche’s fantastic dual-clutch automatic transmission is an option on all Caymans except the track-oriented GT4 trim. This seven-speed transmission offers lightning-fast gear changes and is extremely responsive. Although it does shift automatically, you still have control via steering-wheel-mounted shift paddles if you want it.
The Cayman offers additional performance options if you're looking for a more focused machine. Some of those options include Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes®, which can survive harsh conditions and are larger in diameter to provide better performance. The available Sports Chrono Package adds enhancements to the chassis, engine, and transmission to provide a more responsive experience. When equipped with the PDK Transmission®, the Sports Chrono Package also adds launch control to help you achieve the best acceleration possible.
Porsche’s optional Porsche Torque Vectoring system provides additional stability and performance by varying the distribution of torque to the rear wheels. This system is paired with a mechanically locking rear differential. The system works by applying moderate brake pressure to the inside rear wheel to enable sportier steering action as the car enters corners. As a result, you feel like you have more steering precision, as well as additional traction.
