The 2022 Volvo XC40 packs lots of uniquely Swedish luxury charm into a small package. The interior is spacious for the class, and the minimalist design is complemented by a variety of upscale materials. Overall, the XC40 has a premium look and feel. You’ll also find a lot of clever solutions for storing small items, from laptops to purses. On the road, the XC40 rides comfortably, although it’s not the quickest in the class. There’s also an all-electric version, sold under the name XC40 Recharge. The XC40 offers lots of comfort and technological upgrades, including a truly excellent optional stereo, but the touchscreen interface has a steep learning curve and has a lot of vehicle controls. Also, the contour of the front seat also won’t fit every driver, particularly if you’re on the taller side.
Design and materials: Volvo translated their minimalist luxury design into a smaller package, and filled it with premium materials, especially in the Inscription trim. A compelling alternative to more traditional entry-level luxury SUVs.
Small-item storage: Clever and thoughtful storage touches abound, and there’s a lot of room to stash your gear around the cabin. While the trunk is smaller than average, the XC40 is great at handling the smaller stuff you carry around from day-to-day.
Driver aids: Unlike a lot of German competitors, the XC40 offers most of its driver aids as standard equipment, only reserving adaptive cruise control as an optional extra. Even adaptive headlights, which swivel when you’re taking a turn, are standard.
Touchscreen controls: A lot of the XC40’s systems are controlled through the touchscreen, which makes the confusing menu structure and laggy response time extra frustrating. It takes some time to get comfortable with this system.
