The BMW 2 Series is part of a rare breed of compact luxury coupes that are great cars but have fallen out of favor with SUV-obsessed car buyers. Sitting under the larger BMW 4 Series coupe, the 2 Series is the smallest BMW two-door available. Notable competitors include the Audi A5, Infiniti Q50, and Mercedes C-Class Coupe, but they suffer from dated designs and don't quite match the BMW's performance.
The M240i is the sportier trim of the 2 Series lineup. It includes features such as a powerful turbocharged six-cylinder engine, larger wheels, upgraded brakes, and an adaptive sport suspension. It can also be had with all-wheel drive. The less expensive 230i trim has a less powerful engine and is reviewed separately.
There are no changes to the 2024 BMW M240i. This latest 2 Series is more upscale than the previous generation. The cabin features an expansive curved panel that blends a digital gauge cluster and infotainment touchscreen into a single, seamless display.
Fun to drive: Overall, handling and performance are excellent. The turbocharged six-cylinder engine makes plenty of power and feels strong around town or on the highway. The sport suspension helps keep body motions in check, with only a mild roll at the limit. The brake performance is also impressive and easy to control when you're on the street.
Infotainment system: BMW's controls for media, navigation, and high-level settings are all easy to access. Wireless Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ smartphone integration comes standard, as well as a wireless charging pad and multiple USB-C ports. The available Harman Kardon audio system is impressive, offering clarity and well-rounded bass at higher volumes.
Visibility: The M240i's visibility is better than you might expect. The body pillars, while not thin, don't obstruct the view too much. Blind spots aren't much of an issue either.
Small back seat: There's excellent head-, leg-, and shoulder room up front, but significantly less in the back. The rear seat is small and won't be comfortable for most adults, even on shorter drives. Getting in the back requires some gymnastics that many adults simply won't, or can't, perform. If you regularly carry rear passengers of any size, the 2 Series may not be the best fit.
