The 2021 BMW X4 is a fun alternative to the typical SUV
There's no doubt that SUVs are more practical and convenient than sedans, but what if you enjoy the feel of a powerful engine and sports car-like handling? The 2021 BMW X4 may have that blend of pragmatism and performance you're looking for. It's based on the more conventional X3, but it opts for a sleek roofline, a lower ride height, and increased width. That results in noticeably improved overall performance, yet it still delivers a decent amount of utility. That tapering roofline does have some drawbacks, though, with slightly less rear-seat headroom and legroom than in the X3.
The 2021 X4 is largely the same as last year. Satellite radio and Android Auto™ phone integration have been added to the standard features list. These minor additions did little to improve the X4's standing among other sporty compact luxury SUVs that include the Porsche Macan and Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe. The X4 is a great choice for performance-minded shoppers, but if the hits to interior space are a deal breaker, we suggest sticking with an X3.

What We Like
Strong engine performance: The X4's base engine is a 248-horsepower four-cylinder that delivers decent acceleration, reaching 60 mph in 7.6 seconds. Drivers who desire more performance can opt for the 382-horsepower six-cylinder engine, which can accelerate the X4 to 60 mph in under 5 seconds. Both engines provide smooth, easy-to-manage power and the transmission does a good job of keeping that power at the ready. Overall, the X4 offers a satisfying driving experience for a variety of drivers.
Lots of personalization features: The X4 comes with a long list of options to allow the original buyer to personalize the vehicle, so there’s a lot of variety out there even within a model year. These include several eye-catching paint colors, various wheel styles and sizes, and a range of upholstery and interior trim options. The Premium package is a particularly noteworthy option, as it adds many luxury and convenience features. With all these choices, it's likely that you'll be able to find a configuration of the X4 that suits your tastes.
Sharp handling: The BMW X4 offers a more performance-oriented driving experience than the X3 thanks to its lower ride height and wider stance. Handling instills confidence and is enhanced with responsive steering and dependable brakes. If you're interested in an even sportier experience, consider looking for an X4 with the optional Dynamic Handling package, which further improves the suspension while maintaining a comfortable ride.
What Needs Improvement
Limited space inside: The X4's fastback roofline gives it a sporty appearance, but it also results in a loss of about an inch in head- and legroom compared to the BMW X3. Additionally, the X4 has a smaller cargo capacity of 18.5 cubic feet, compared to the X3's 28.7 cubic feet. While this may be a significant difference, the X4 could have sufficient room for many consumers.
