BMW has built a reputation for making luxurious sedans with potent performance, and that has carried over to its SUVs. The 2022 BMW X2 is a prime example of this, as it's the sleeker and more inspiring alternative to the conventional X3 which it's based on. The fastback-like roofline, lower ride height, and wider stance give the X4 a unique and sporty appearance that's supported with plentiful power and sharp handling.
For 2022, the X4 received a rather significant refresh. There's a new grille, bumpers, and lights on the outside, as well as a new mild hybrid component to the six-cylinder engine upgrade. Inside, the X4 gained a new instrument panel, a larger infotainment touchscreen, and standard sport seats with more aggressive side bolstering.
The X4's sporty shape does cut into passenger and cargo space somewhat, but that's not all that uncommon for the coupe-like SUVs it competes against. These include the Porsche Macan, Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe, and Genesis GV70.
Potent power: The base 248-horsepower four-cylinder engine is plenty for the majority of drivers as it accelerates to 60 mph in a respectable 7.6 seconds. More spirited drivers will want to upgrade to the 382-hp six-cylinder, which propels the X4 to 60 mph in under 5 seconds. Power delivery is smooth and easy to manage, while the transmission does a good job of keeping that power on tap.
Lots of customization options: The X4 is offered with plenty of choices to match the buyer’s personal style, so there’s a lot of variety even within a single model year. From some brilliant blue and red paint selections, several wheel styles and sizes, as well as a long list of upholstery and interior trim options, it seems as though there's a specification for every taste. The Premium package is one option to look for because it adds several luxury and convenience features.
Corners like a smaller car: With a lower ride height and wider stance than the related BMW X3, the X4 is the choice for drivers who crave performance. It handles with much more confidence than the majority of SUVs, bolstered by precise steering and dependable brakes. If this appeals to you, we suggest also searching for an X4 with the optional Dynamic Handling package that further sharpens the suspension with minimal impact on ride comfort.
Compromised interior space: The X4's fastback roofline may give it a sporty silhouette, but there's a drawback to that sleek shape. You'll lose about an inch in head- and legroom compared to the BMW X3, and cargo capacity is capped at 18.5 cubic feet. That's quite a downgrade from the X3's 28.7-cubic-foot capacity, but it should still be adequate for most people.
