2024 marks the debut of the Buick Envista compact SUV

The 2024 Buick Envista marks the company's latest effort to lure younger buyers to the not-quite-luxury brand with a compact SUV. The Envista shares many features with the Chevrolet Trax, which is also produced by General Motors, and competes with other luxury-ish SUVs like the Mazda CX-30 and Volkswagen Taos.

The Envista is roomier than the Buick Encore GX, and all four seats are comfortable for full-grown adults. It also comes with a wide array of standard features, including wireless Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™, lane keeping assistance, and automatic emergency braking. Choosing the second-tier Sport Touring trim unlocks the Envista's most desirable driver aids, like adaptive cruise control, blind-spot warning, and rear cross-traffic assist.

You can't get the Envista with all-wheel drive, which is its primary drawback. The Mazda CX-30 is also quite a bit sportier than the Buick, though you'll find the Envista quick enough to merge onto highways and make lane changes. General Motors' impressive hands-free driving tech, called Super Cruise, is not available on the Envista.

5 reasons to buy the 2024 Buick Envista

What We Like

  • Comfort: There's plenty of room in the Envista's cabin for four adults, something that's not often true with subcompact SUVs. The ride is controlled, and the Envista doesn't have a problem dealing with most road imperfections. You'll feel the impact of a big pothole, but uneven mall parking lots are unlikely to be a problem.

  • Eye-catching design: Looks may be subjective, but the 2024 Buick Envista's design is striking in a way not often seen from the American manufacturer. The slim headlights and wide grille help the Envista stand out from a crowd in all the best ways.

  • Fuel economy: The Envista gets an EPA-estimated 30 mpg in combined driving, which is a touch better than the Mazda CX-30 (up to 29 mpg combined) and a touch worse than the Volkswagen Taos (a max 31 mpg combined).

The good news: The Envista doesn't require premium gas, so you can get a luxury-lite vehicle without the added cost of higher-octane fuel.

 What Needs Improvement

  • Interior: The Buick Envista comes closest to grasping luxury status with the top-of-the-line Avenir trim, but even then it doesn't quite compete with Mercedes-Benz, BMW, or even Mazda when it comes to luxury finish. It's a nice interior, but it falls behind what you will find in some of its competitors.
