In its purest form, the BMW 4 Series is made for those who prefer a sporty two-door luxury coupe or the top-down experience of a convertible to a traditional sedan. It is based on the 3 Series sedan but has a higher starting price (and a different front grille). Speaking of which, there is also a 4 Series Gran Coupe that, despite its name, is a sedan with coupe-like proportions.
The 430i name refers to the entry-level trim of the 4 Series lineup. It includes a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, rear-wheel drive, and an eight-speed automatic transmission. 430i xDrive models add all-wheel-drive to the features list. There is also a pricier M440i trim, which adds a more powerful six-cylinder engine and other performance upgrades; it is reviewed separately.
The 2024 BMW 430i gets a big change to its interior. The center screen has been seamlessly merged with the gauge cluster in a curved layout, while the shifter, climate, and audio controls have been revised to a sleeker design that’s less button-heavy.
Fun to drive: The 4 Series packs a lot of punch even in its base 430i coupe form, which is the model Edmunds tested. It accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in just 5.6 seconds, quicker than the previous generation's 6.2 seconds. Handling is a 4 Series strength, with stable composure around tight bends. The eight-speed automatic shifts smoothly and always seems to choose the right gear, making this an easy car to live with.
Fuel economy: The rear-wheel-drive 430i coupe gets an EPA-estimated 28 mpg in combined driving, making it one of the most efficient vehicles in its class (xDrive models are estimated at 27 mpg). During Edmunds' testing, it averaged 30.5 mpg on the evaluation route, proving that these estimates should be achievable in the real world. The four-cylinder's fantastic performance doesn't come with a penalty at the pump.
Ride comfort: Edmunds' test 430i had the available Dynamic Handling package, which adds an adaptive suspension. It struck a nice balance between compliant and firm. Rough roads didn't upset the car, and it rode comfortably on most types of pavement. The standard suspension should produce an even cushier ride.
Headroom: The standard sunroof can make headroom an issue for taller drivers. Edmunds’ test driver, who is just over 6 feet tall, had to adjust his seating position to avoid making contact with the headliner. Even then, larger bumps on the road caused him to hit his head. Since the sunroof comes standard, the 430i is better suited to those who are 6 feet tall or shorter.
