Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and this certainly applies to this BMW 4 Series. Essentially a two-door version of the BMW 3 Series sedan, the 4 Series coupe and convertible look sleek, sophisticated, and sporty from the sides and rear. When viewed head-on, however, the restyled front grille is a love-it-or-hate-it proposition.
The 430i moniker refers to the base trim of the 4 Series lineup. It features a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, rear-wheel drive (or all-wheel drive on 430i xDrive models), and an eight-speed automatic transmission. A sportier M440i trim adds a more powerful six-cylinder engine and several performance upgrades; we review it separately.
The 2022 BMW 430i lineup adds a Gran Coupe variant that, despite its name, is a sedan with coupe-like proportions and a rear hatch in place of a trunk. Other 430i changes include small revisions to the standard and premium packages, plus the addition of Aventurin Red Metallic and Brooklyn Grey Metallic paint colors.
Makes driving fun: The 4 Series has plenty of power in its four-cylinder 430i coupe form, which is the model Edmunds tested. It accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in just 5.6 seconds, quicker than the previous generation's 6.2 seconds. Handling is a 4 Series strength, with confident handling on winding roads. The eight-speed automatic shifts smoothly and always chooses the right gear, making this an easy car to live with.
Impressive fuel economy: The rear-wheel-drive 430i coupe gets an EPA-estimated 28 mpg in combined driving, making it one of the most efficient vehicles in its class (xDrive models are estimated at 27 mpg combined).
Plush ride quality: Edmunds' test car had the available Dynamic Handling package, which adds an adaptive suspension. It struck a nice balance between compliant and firm. Rough roads didn't upset the coupe, and it rode comfortably on most types of pavement. Even if you don't have sporty intentions, this package still delivers a luxurious ride. With the standard suspension, it should produce an even cushier ride.
Better headroom: The standard sunroof can make headroom an issue for taller drivers. Edmunds' test driver, who is about 6-foot-4, had to make numerous seat adjustments to avoid making contact with the headliner. Even then, larger potholes caused him to hit his head. Since the sunroof comes standard, the 430i is best suited to drivers who are 6-foot-tall or shorter.
