The 2020 Cadillac XT4 is an entry-level luxury crossover SUV, with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine powering either the front or all four wheels. Though small, the XT4 seats five people and offers a roomy back seat, and there’s decent cargo space behind the rear seats as well.
For 2020, the XT4 comes in Luxury, Premium Luxury, and Sport trim levels. New standard driver-assist features were added, and the infotainment controls gained more functionality. In addition, the adaptive sport suspension is more widely available. An Off-Road driving mode helps with traction, but the 6.7 inches of ground clearance isn’t very much.
Every 2020 XT4 has an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay®, Android Auto™, and subscription access to connected services like a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot. Wi-Fi hotspots require a data plan to activate and may also require a compatible device. See the owner's manual or manufacturer website for more information. Most driver-assist features are either optional or only available on higher trims, including blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, lane keeping assistance, adaptive cruise control, and a surround-view camera.
The XT4’s biggest drawback is that it’s less refined than rivals like the Audi Q3, BMW X1, and Mercedes GLA.
Design, inside and out: Cadillacs have a distinctive look, and that’s true of the XT4, which looks like it has seen the hot end of an iron more than once. All sharp angles and tailored creases, it is well proportioned and looks upscale. That’s true of the interior, too, which has a clean look and available high-end seating materials.
Roomy interior: Thanks to a low, flat dashboard and seats you can position high in the SUV, the XT4 feels larger inside than you might expect. That’s especially true of the rear seat, which offers a surprising amount of legroom for the small luxury SUV class. Cargo space isn’t quite as impressive, but it's nevertheless useful and more accommodating than some of the XT4’s rivals.
Infotainment system: In addition to providing a long list of standard and desirable features such as Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and access to a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot (a paid subscription is necessary),
Overall refinement: The Cadillac XT4 lacks refinement. The engine is loud, and when you’re driving this SUV, too much road and suspension noise makes its way into the cabin. Plus, the XT4 rides firmly, lacking the smoothness you might expect from a luxury model. The interior looks good and, especially in the Premium Luxury or Sport trim level, features quality materials in spots, but overall it comes across as inexpensively outfitted.
