2017 Chevrolet Caprice review

1. Choice of two powerful engines 

Originally designed as a police interceptor, the 2017 Chevrolet Caprice comes with two power-packed engine options built to keep up in any hot pursuit scenario. The choices are a 3.6L V6 engine producing 301 horsepower and 265 lb-ft of torque, or a muscular 6.0L V8 powerplant packing 355 horsepower and an impressive 384 lb-ft of torque. Both deliver fearsome acceleration away from the lights. The V6 version can achieve zero to 60 mph in 6.7 seconds, while the V8 equivalent can get to 60 mph from a standing start in just 5.3 seconds.  

2. Handling is fun and dynamic 

Another prerequisite of any good police cruiser is sharp handling, and the 2017 Caprice absolutely meets that requirement. And now you get to benefit from those performance upgrades too. A six-speed automatic transmission is paired with a rear-wheel-drive chassis, for maximum excitement in the corners as well as away from the lights. But with four-link independent rear suspension, sports disc brakes, and a limited-slip differential all included as standard, the 2017 Caprice can more than hold its own in the twisties — putting a big smile on your face in the process.  

3. Spacious cabin 

Step inside the 2017 Caprice, and you’ll discover a vast cabin with space for you and all your passengers to stretch out no matter how long the journey. There’s seating for five inside, with impressive amounts of legroom front and rear — 42.2 inches in the front seats, and a huge 43.2 inches in the rear seats. Once again, being a former police vehicle means you get interior features you may not find anywhere else, like a center console mounting area originally designed for police equipment, as well as more traditional creature comforts like dual-zone automatic climate control and a Chevrolet MyLink™ infotainment system with seven-inch touchscreen.   

4. Equally generous trunk and storage space 

That theme of spaciousness and practicality is continued into the trunk, with plenty of space for daily cargo and road trip luggage. You get 17.2 cu-ft of cargo volume behind the rear seats, enough to swallow up the weekly groceries with ease. And should you need a bit more space for lengthy items like furniture, 60/40 split-folding rear seats are included as standard, meaning you can fold them flat with ease.  

5. Unique curb appeal 

Given the 2017 Chevrolet Caprice was never originally offered for sale to the general public, and was built solely for police use, it has a unique and understated curb appeal that sets it apart from many other full-size and performance sedans. There’s just something cool about knowing you are driving something quite exclusive. The low-key styling hardly screams ‘performance sedan’ either, but that also makes it the perfect sleeper car — anyone who sees your 2017 Caprice and thinks it’s merely a run-of-the-mill sedan is in for quite a shock when you put your foot down.
