The 2022 Chevrolet Colorado’s design and engineering date back to 2015, so it’s no surprise that this is the final run of the second-generation version of this midsize pickup truck.
The main change to the 2022 Colorado is a new Trail Boss option package for the LT and Z71 trim levels, which adds a one-inch suspension lift, skid plates, and black 17-inch wheels. This package also removes the front air dam, which can hamper off-road capability.
Otherwise, the 2022 Colorado continues in extended-cab and crew-cab styles with a gas four-cylinder, gas V6, or turbocharged diesel four-cylinder engine. An automatic transmission powers the rear wheels unless you get four-wheel drive. When properly configured, a Colorado can tow 7,700 pounds and carry 1,550 pounds of payload. Various factors may impact towing capacity, including weight of passengers, cargo, and options/accessories.
Colorados offer simple but well-equipped infotainment systems, but few driver aids are available. Furthermore, this truck faces more rivals than ever, from the popular Toyota Tacoma to the small, hybrid-powered Ford Maverick. Still, class-leading towing capacity, an available turbo-diesel engine, and the ZR2 off-roading model keep the Colorado in the hunt.
Tow ratings: Equip the Colorado with its optional turbocharged 2.8-liter four-cylinder diesel engine, and this midsize truck can tow up to 7,700 pounds when properly equipped.
Infotainment system: The Colorado offers a simple and intuitive infotainment system, but it isn’t lacking in features. In addition to Bluetooth®, it provides Apple CarPlay®, Android Auto™, and satellite radio. You can also subscribe to connected services, giving you access to a Wi-Fi hotspot and Amazon Alexa integration.
Off-roading capability: This year, the new Trail Boss package improves the Colorado LT and Z71 models’ off-roading capability. They join the even more capable ZR2 and almost unstoppable ZR2 Bison to provide impressive stair-step off-roading talent within the Colorado lineup. Add the torque-rich turbocharged diesel engine, and one of these Colorados is almost certain to get you there and back.
Driver assistance: Chevrolet offers few driver-assist features on the aging Colorado. A Safety package is optional with the LT and Z71 trims, installing forward collision warning and lane departure warning. Rear parking assist sensors and a high-definition reversing camera are the only other driver aids of note. In addition, the extended-cab models do not excel in crash tests and all Colorados earn unimpressive rollover resistance scores.
