The 2023 Chevrolet Colorado is a midsize pickup truck that competes with the likes of the Ford Ranger, Toyota Tacoma, and Nissan Frontier. Fresh from a complete redesign this model year, the 2023 Colorado is available in five trims: WT, LT, Trail Boss, Z71, and ZR2. Each features a turbocharged 2.7-liter inline four-cylinder engine that produces 237 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque in the WT and LT, 310 hp and 391 lb-ft in the Trail Boss, and 310 hp and 430 lb-ft in the ZR2. Rear-wheel drive is standard, but four-wheel drive is also available. All Colorados come as a four-door crew cab with a 5-foot cargo bed.
Maximum towing capacity is a stout 7,700 pounds. Various factors may impact towing capacity, including weight of passengers, cargo, and options/accessories. Both the Trail Boss and ZR2 ride on lifted suspensions to give them better all-terrain capability. The cabin features a digital instrument display and an 11.3-inch center touchscreen that comes standard with wireless Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™, two USB ports, and satellite radio.
Performance: Upgrading to the more powerful versions of the turbocharged 2.7-liter four-cylinders brings along much better acceleration and highway passing power. The Colorado also gets around corners easily thanks to its light and surprisingly agile handling.
Tech features: The Google-based navigation is an especially nice touch in the Colorado. Crisp graphics and clear-cut menus mark this infotainment system as one of the most user-friendly available in a midsize truck. Having wireless smartphone connectivity standard is another advantage.
Off-road capability: The Trail Boss and ZR2 trims are tuned for hard work and all-terrain adventures. Each rides on a lifted suspension and, with the ZR2, the Colorado gets underbody skid plates, front and rear locking differentials, and chunky 33-inch all-terrain tires.
Lack of variety: The Colorado is only available in crew-cab format with a five-foot cargo bed. That’s fine if those proportions are what you need in a midsize truck, though it could limit its appeal to people who want more customization in their pickup.
