The 2019 Honda HR-V is an extra-small SUV with extra-large cargo-carrying capabilities. The flexible folding seats (including a fold-down front passenger seat) can carry the kind of bulky or long items that some large vehicles would struggle with. And available all-wheel drive means the HR-V can haul your gear year-round. The weakest point is the slow and noisy engine, but at least EPA-estimated fuel efficiency is better than average for the segment.
2019 saw some very important upgrades come to the HR-V. The EX, EX-L, and Touring trims all get standard forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking and adaptive cruise control. Those trims and the HR-V Sport get a new infotainment system with Android Auto™ and Apple CarPlay®. The touchscreen interface isn’t the best to use, but smartphone integration makes it a solid plus.
Passenger room: Even with its small exterior, the HR-V is roomy enough inside to fit adults in both the front and back row. The driver’s seat is adjustable enough that most people should be able to find a comfortable position.
Cargo space: The HR-V gets top marks for practicality, with its flexible folding seats that allow for multiple cargo arrangements. The fold-down front seat can even help accommodate longer items than you’d expect.
Fuel economy: While this isn’t the most fuel-efficient subcompact SUV, compared to its direct competitors the 2019 HR-V offers an above-average EPA rating to go with its above-average space for people and cargo.
The engine: The trade-off for the HR-V’s above-average fuel economy is a sluggish and loud engine. Under acceleration, there’s a lot of noise and vibration, and even when cruising the engine makes an audible drone.
