Honda brought the Passport back to its lineup in 2019 after a 17-year hiatus, filling a gap between the compact CR-V and the three-row Pilot. Fresh styling last year gave the five-passenger Passport SUV a more rugged look. This update also added the off-road-styled TrailSport trim. For the 2023 model year, Honda has made all-wheel drive standard on all Passports. Honda offers the Passport in three trim levels: EX-L, TrailSport, and Elite. All are powered by a 3.5-liter V6 engine putting out 280 horsepower, sending power to the road via Honda’s variable-torque all-wheel-drive system. With a roomy interior and spacious cargo area, the Passport performs well in this very competitive segment that includes models like the Jeep Grand Cherokee, Hyundai Santa Fe, and Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport.
Performance: The Passport delivers good acceleration with a powerful V6 engine teamed with a smooth-shifting nine-speed automatic transmission. Handling is surprisingly good for a vehicle of this size, with responsive steering, strong brakes, and a relatively firm suspension. The torque-vectoring all-wheel drive provides excellent control both on and off the pavement.
Technology: The Passport features a nicely integrated eight-inch touchscreen display with quick response time and large, easily navigable icons. Android Auto™ and Apple CarPlay® connectivity is standard on all trim levels, and multiple USB ports can be found front and rear. The top-level Passport Elite also gets a 540-watt premium audio system.
Utility: One of the advantages of having only two rows is the large cargo area: The Passport boasts more than 50 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats, doubling to more than 100 cubic feet with seats folded flat. The cabin also has multiple bins and cubbies for storing smaller items. When more gear needs hauling, the Passport can tow as much as 5,000 pounds, when properly equipped.
Ride quality: While the Passport delivers a smooth ride on pavement, Honda designed this model to handle off-road duties as well. Higher ground clearance and torque-vectoring all-wheel drive make it very capable, but the ride is quite jarring when the terrain gets rough. Even at slow speeds, a rutted trail is certain to cause a coffee spill.
