The 2022 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid is a carryover from 2021, and was an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Top Safety Pick for the second year in a row. The selling points of this car are its affordability, fuel economy, and driver assistance features. However, the Elantra Hybrid is not a particularly fast car. Competing models in 2022 included the Toyota Prius and Corolla Hybrid, and the Honda Insight.
Among the top features of the Elantra Hybrid is an impressive set of standard driver assistance features for its price range. The base Blue trim comes with automatic high beams, blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic warning, and lane keeping assistance. The upscale Limited trim adds reverse parking assistance, highway steering assistance, and reverse parking assistance.
The list of standard features continues with heated front seats and an eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Android Auto™ and Apple CarPlay® support coming standard on the base Blue trim. Limited trim buyers enjoy a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system with voice control, heated and ventilated seats, and wireless device charging. Advanced driver assistance features: The Elantra Hybrid offers much more in the way of advanced driver assistance tech than other cars in its class. Assistance tech includes forward collision avoidance with pedestrian detection, blind-spot warning with collision avoidance assistance and rear cross-traffic warning, plus a full set of lane keeping features. Standard equipment also includes safe street-side exit assistance and automatic high beams. Limited trim buyers will get adaptive cruise control, reverse parking assistance, and highway driving steering assistance.
Excellent fuel economy: The most efficient Elantra Hybrid is the basic Blue trim. This model offers EPA-estimated fuel economy of 53 mpg in city driving, up to 56 mpg on the highway, and an average 54 mpg in combined city and highway driving.
Roomy and comfortable cabin: For a compact sedan, the Elantra Hybrid offers a roomy passenger cabin. The seats are supportive and comfortable, and all the controls are laid out for easy reach and convenient operation. Limited trim buyers will appreciate the large 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system. With wireless smartphone integration for both Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™, navigation instructions look much better on the larger screen.
Performance: Engine performance is somewhat lackluster, with modest horsepower and torque from the hybrid engine and electric motor. Acceleration is not a strong point of the Elantra Hybrid. However, that’s a tradeoff for the excellent fuel economy, so you have to decide how important it is to have a fast car versus an efficient car.
