2021 was the first year for the Hyundai Elantra Hybrid, and the car was rated a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The hybrid driveline debuted at the same time as a general redesign, so the entire Elantra lineup was new this year. The new Elantra is a good-looking car, with a functional and attractive design. The hybrid driveline included a 1.6-liter gasoline engine paired with an electric motor, both driving the front wheels through a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
Competitors in 2021 included the Toyota Prius and Toyota Corolla Hybrid, Honda Insight, and Hyundai’s own Ioniq Hybrid. Compared to all of these, the Elantra Hybrid should be lower-priced, but with competitive fuel economy and features.
Leading reasons to consider the Elantra Hybrid include a generous list of advanced driver assistance features, a comfortable interior with a few advanced luxury options, and of course the excellent fuel economy of the hybrid drivelines. Low points include lackluster acceleration and reported high road noise. Certain vehicles may have unrepaired safety recalls. Click here to look up a specific vehicle.
Fuel economy: The Elantra Hybrid is very efficient with gas. The most basic Blue trim model returns EPA-estimated fuel economy of 53 mpg in city driving, 56 mpg on the highway, and 54 mpg in combined city and highway driving. The Limited trim is only slightly less efficient, getting 49 mpg in the city, 52 mpg on the highway, and 50 mpg combined, according to EPA estimates.
Driver assistance technology: The new Elantra Hybrid offers standard driver-assist equipment including forward collision avoidance with pedestrian detection, blind-spot warning with collision avoidance assistance and rear cross-traffic warning, plus a full set of lane keeping features. Standard equipment also includes safe street-side exit assistance and automatic high beams. Limited trim buyers also enjoy adaptive cruise control, reverse parking assistance, and highway driving steering assistance.
Comfortable cabin: The Elantra Hybrid offers plenty of room for passengers, with comfortable seats in front and back. The front seats are heated, even on the base Blue trim, and they are supportive and comfortable. Driver controls, infotainment, and climate controls are smart and convenient. Blue trim customers get an eight-inch touchscreen, but if you find an example with Limited trim, you’ll enjoy the larger 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system. With wireless smartphone integration for both Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ on both trim levels, navigation is included on your phone.
Driveline performance: With 139 combined system horsepower and 109 lb-ft of torque, the Elantra Hybrid is somewhat slow to accelerate and not very exciting to drive. This is because the system was tuned to deliver excellent fuel economy, but a thorough test drive is recommended to see if the performance will meet your needs.
