Hyundai introduced the five-passenger Santa Fe crossover about 20 years ago. Now in its fourth generation, the Santa Fe resides in the Hyundai lineup between the compact Tucson and seven-passenger Palisade. Trim options include hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains. The Santa Fe received a face-lift in 2021, and for the 2023 model year, the stylish crossover remains primarily the same with just a few feature changes. The 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe is offered in five trim levels, starting with the well-equipped SE and ranging up to the top-of-the-line Calligraphy with quilted Nappa leather trim and stylish 20-inch alloy wheels. All Santa Fe variants come standard with front-wheel drive, with the option of Hyundai’s HTRAC all-wheel-drive system. Two engines are offered, including a powerful 277-horsepower turbocharged motor. The Santa Fe brings a lot to the road, competing well against models like the Honda Passport, Subaru Outback, and Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport.
Interior: The 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe features a roomy cabin with good legroom and headroom for front and rear seat passengers. The available panoramic sunroof adds to the spacious feel. Front seats have a range of adjustments and offer good support with heating and cooling available. Dual-pane front windows help to keep the cabin quiet, minimizing road and wind noise.
Technology: The Santa Fe offers two different display screens, including a premium 10.25-inch screen. Navigating the system is intuitive, and Android Auto™ and Apple CarPlay® connect wirelessly. Controls are nicely laid out, with hard buttons for the most used features. Hyundai’s advanced driver-assist features are among the best in the industry, with a smooth-operating adaptive cruise control and a convenient blind-spot warning view.
Value: Hyundai has always been known for delivering significant value in its vehicles, and the Santa Fe is no exception. High-quality materials give this two-row crossover a premium feel and even the higher-priced Calligraphy edition brings a high level of luxury for considerably less money than similarly equipped competitors. Adding to the value equation is Hyundai’s 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty.
Performance: The standard engine in the 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe is a 2.5-liter engine putting out 191 horsepower — adequate but not quick. Higher-level trims get the more powerful 277-horsepower turbo engine; it is certainly quicker, but power delivery is inconsistent, making it difficult to smoothly control the throttle.
