The 2019 Jeep Renegade gets refreshed with new engine option

The 2019 Jeep Renegade brings big Jeep personality and capability to an extra-small package. The available Trailhawk trim in particular provides off-road-specific equipment, like a low-range crawl gear, that’s unique among competitors. Other trim levels offer a pillowy ride and easy-to-use tech features, along with a nicely-made interior.

For 2019, Jeep refreshed the Renegade with a few styling tweaks and some big updates under the hood. The formerly-optional four-cylinder engine is now standard equipment, which is a nice upgrade, and the Limited and Trailhawk models now get a turbocharged engine that makes significantly more torque. While the driver aid package now includes park assist and front-parking sensors, all driver aids are optional, unlike many of the Renegade’s competitors. The exception is a rearview camera.

On the down side, the automatic transmission doesn’t shift smoothly. The Renegade’s boxy shape makes for extra wind noise on the freeway, and doesn’t pay dividends in interior space, with a tight rear seat and small cargo area.

5 reasons to buy the 2019 Jeep Renegade

What We Like

Ride: The Jeep Renegade has an almost pillowy ride, one of the most comfortable in the subcompact SUV segment. But even with the accommodating ride, the Renegade still handles well.

User-friendly tech: The available 8.4-inch touchscreen infotainment has a crisp and clear screen and the interface is easy to learn. The built-in navigation is sluggish, but Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto work well.

Capability: Opt for the Renegade Trailhawk, and you get a surprisingly off-road capable subcompact SUV. It even offers a low-range crawl gear. That makes the Renegade unique in a segment where some vehicles don’t even offer AWD.

What Needs Improvement

Practicality: In spite of its boxy shape, the Renegade doesn’t offer a ton of practicality. Rear-seat legroom is tight, and the cargo space behind the rear seat is small even for a subcompact.
