The 2023 Jeep Wagoneer is the most recent entry into the full-size truck-based SUV class, joining the Chevrolet Tahoe and similarly sized SUVs. The Wagoneer is the largest of its competitors, and like them, it uses traditional body-on-frame construction and offers available V8 power.
The Wagoneer offers seating for up to eight passengers, towing capacity up to 10,000 pounds, and up to 116.7 cubic feet of cargo area with all the rear seats folded down. The Wagoneer comes in several trim levels from basic to the luxurious Grand Wagoneer (covered separately) to meet a variety of budgets.
After its debut in 2022, changes for 2023 include a new twin-turbocharged V6 engine that is standard on most trim levels, although fuel economy with either engine is not a strong point. A long-wheelbase Wagoneer L model was also added. The Wagoneer features a nice interior, including an easy-to-use touchscreen infotainment system. If you’re looking for a big SUV to carry a large family and a trailer, the 2023 Jeep Wagoneer is definitely a candidate.
Off-pavement capability: As a Jeep product, the Wagoneer’s four-wheel-drive system benefits from the brand’s desire to uphold its off-road reputation. That’s why this very large SUV does much better than you might expect when the pavement ends. Let’s be clear, this is not a Wrangler Rubicon, but you can expect to handle a muddy dirt road easily, even when the going gets steep. The Wagoneer will get you to the campsite and back out again.
Towing capability: Many modern SUVs sacrifice towing capacity for ride and luxury, but not the Wagoneer. If you have a heavy travel trailer, or a boat, or some power toys, the Wagoneer will easily pull them and haul all your gear for a fun weekend.
Hauling people: When you need to get eight people from point A to point B, there are very few SUVs that will do that. The Wagoneer is one of them, and it will get there with everyone in comfort, especially if you choose the long-wheelbase Wagoneer L model.
Bouncy ride: There’s a trade-off for the cargo and passenger capacity of the Wagoneer, and it’s that this is a big, heavy SUV. It tends to rock on its springs and it’s slow to respond to steering inputs. If you’re just coming to a full-size SUV, that can be a surprise for some drivers.
