The 2021 Range Rover Sport is perched below the top-of-the-line Range Rover SUV in terms of both its size and price. Not that you’d consider it anything other than a full-fledged luxury SUV and one that continues the Land Rover brand’s legacy of go-anywhere capability. Fitted with four-wheel drive as standard, the Range Rover Sport has a substantial roster of engine choices. These include two turbocharged inline six-cylinders, two supercharged V8s, a turbocharged four-cylinder plug-in hybrid, and even a turbocharged diesel V6.
Pitted against the likes of the Porsche Cayenne, BMW X5, and Audi Q8, the Range Rover Sport holds its own in terms of straight-line performance, style, and its elegantly appointed cabin. Leather seating is standard and the dashboard layout is minimalist and modern. Where it struggles, however, is in day-to-day driving refinement and an infotainment system that lacks the usability found in many rivals.
Cabin quality: The interior of the Range Rover Sport is surprisingly minimalist, though it looks every bit a premium cabin. Leather is standard and real metal trim with plenty of soft-touch surfaces create a classy environment in which to spend your time.
Engine choices: Four-wheel drive is standard no matter which engine you choose. That’s good because there are a whole lot of options when it comes to picking the ideal powertrain for this luxury SUV. Most people will likely be more than happy with the acceleration provided by the standard 355-hp turbocharged six-cylinder.
All-terrain prowess: The Range Rover Sport isn’t a posh SUV that looks rugged but falls to pieces on anything more demanding than a grassy parking lot at a local pumpkin patch. Four-wheel drive and an adjustable air suspension give this Land Rover tenacious grip when off-road driving is demanded of it.
Infotainment system quirks: The dual-screen layout in the center of the dash is handsome, but it’s a shame the system’s responses are clunky. This has been an issue with Land Rover vehicles for a while and we’re hoping a fix comes soon.
