City-sized hatchback with some sportiness

The 2014 Mazda 2 is a subcompact hatchback with a tiny footprint. While this may leave it lacking interior space, this hatchback is great in city traffic. Its small platform allows you to quickly zip in and out of traffic and fit it in even the tightest parking garage space. But it’s also a Mazzda, meaning it has sports car DNA. Sure, it’s not up for a weekend track day, but the Mazda 2 boasts communicative steering and nimble handling, making it fun on a curvy back road.

5 reasons to buy the 2014 Mazda Mazda2

1. City-sized

The main point of a subcompact hatchback like the 2014 Mazda 2 is its ability to zip in and out of traffic easily. The Mazda 2 does this well, thanks to its small body. Plus, you can easily see all the traffic around you with good outward visibility.

2. Balanced powertrain

The 2014 Mazda 2 comes standard with a 1.5L four-cylinder engine that delivers 100 hp and 98 lb-ft of torque. This doesn’t sound like much, but with the right throttle and shift points — with the standard five-speed manual transmission, of course — it comes to life and makes this tiny hatchback feel respectably quick. But this small engine shines with its EPA-estimated 29 mpg city, 34 mpg highway, and 31 mpg combined with the manual transmission.

The optional four-speed automatic transmission drops these numbers to an EPA-estimated 28 mpg city, 33 mpg highway, and 30 mpg combined.

3. Handles better than expected

Mazda is known for injecting a little sports car DNA into all its models, and the 2014 Mazda 2 is no exception. It’s not a performance hatchback, but a tight suspension and communicative steering system deliver nicely on curvy roads. This is one subcompact hatchback that’s sure to put a smile on your face.

4. Simple interior

Today’s cars have all the bells and whistles that can overwhelm some drivers. The 2014 Mazda 2 thrives on simplicity. Its interior lacks all the wild styling details and interfaces seen in other vehicles. It sticks with a clean, straightforward design with easy-to-use climate control and audio system interfaces. However, the Mazda 2 has a few modern touches to appeal to the tech lover inside you, such as standard Bluetooth® connectivity, remote keyless entry, a four-speaker audio system, an auxiliary audio jack, a USB port, and more.

5. Comfortable front seats

The 2014 Mazda 2 is most serviceable as a two-passenger model, as its rear seats are a little tight for most. That said, those front thrones will treat you and your front-seat passenger well. They offer lots of support and padding to make even long drives tolerable. Plus, with 42.6 inches of legroom, these seats can easily accommodate taller folks.
