When you don’t need a full-size pickup, the 2014 Nissan Frontier midsize is ready to work for a living or help you enjoy off-road adventures when suitably equipped. You have a lot of choices with extended cab and crew cab body styles, four- or six-cylinder engines, two- and four-wheel drive options and five trim levels. For off-pavement driving, seek out the Desert Runner or the Pro-4X. If you’re looking for a work truck, the 6.1-foot bed version standard on King Cabs and available on crew cabs can help with hauling duties. Plus, it’s a comfortable daily driver with a host of standard and available driver assist features.
First, start with five models: S, SV, Desert Runner, Pro-4X, and SL. Then, there are two engine options depending on the model: a 2.5 L four-cylinder good for 152 horsepower or the 4.0 L V6 with 261 hp. Pick an automatic or manual transmission where available and two-wheel or automatic four-wheel drive. Consider bed length as well, depending on how you'll use this truck. Hopefully, you’ll find a Frontier that fits your style.
When suitably equipped, the four-cylinder Frontier can tow an estimated 3,500 pounds.
For a more adventurous Frontier, Desert Runner and Pro-4X models are equipped for off-road trails for work and recreation. The Desert Runner comes with the 2WD with the V6, fitted with an off-road suspension. The 4WD-only Pro-4X steps up with 8.9 inches of ground clearance, Bilstein shocks, a locking rear differential, underbody skid plates, and more.
Whether you’re hauling cargo for the job or gear for outdoor fun, the Frontier is ready to make it work for you. Opt for the standard 5-ft bed or go bigger with the 6.1-foot bed, standard on King Cabs and available on crew cabs to handle all your stuff. The available movable tie-downs and a sliding bed extender make your cargo bed more useful and versatile. If you have cargo you don’t want to expose to the elements, the Frontier is ready for that, too. King Cabs feature rear-hinged doors that swing open to reveal a pair of fold-down jump seats for extra seating or folded up to make a secure cargo area for your valuable or easily damaged goods. Crew cab versions get a 60/40 split folding rear bench seat.
If work is on your mind, the base-level S comes with a manual transmission and a few extras. For 2014, the S trim with automatic transmission has new standard features, including Bluetooth® connectivity, cruise control, and air conditioning. The PRO-4X gets standard heated cloth seats, also available on the SV. Additional changes for 2014 include three new wheel options, upgraded audio and navigation, and a sliding rear window on all Crew Cabs except the S trim. The SV level adds keyless entry, full power accessories, and a 4.3-inch color display. Moving up to Crew Cab SL brings leather seats, a premium audio system, and the NissanConnect® system.
