Ram first launched its standalone line of trucks back in 2009. The 2023 Ram 5500 marks fourteen years of development, and all those years of innovation have produced a standout workhorse. If you're looking for a truck that balances power and perks, it would be hard to go wrong with the Ram 5500. The 2023 Ram 5500 comes in two trims (Tradesman and Laramie), with a single engine option, and either crew or cab configuration. Whatever your hauling and carpooling needs, the 2023 Ram 5500 is likely up for the job.
On the 2023 Ram 5500, there's no need to sweat which engine to opt for. Under the hood, you'll find a 370-hp 6.4L HEMI® V8 engine as standard. This turbodiesel powertrain is hooked to a six-speed automatic transmission, which means more power at lower RPM. That kind of power gets you 800 lb-ft of torque and an estimated 21,000 lbs of towing capacity, when properly equipped—enough for any number of haul jobs.
The 2023 Ram 5500 comes in two forms: regular cab or crew cab. The essential difference between the two is seating. With the regular cab, you get three seats—two standard, with a heavy-duty, vinyl split-bench in between. With the crew cab configuration, on the other hand, you get six seats across two rows, with 40.2 inches of legroom in the second row. If your priority is hauling, and you don't plan on transporting a family or friends around too, the regular cab is a good bet.
There are two trim options on the 2023 Ram 5500—Tradesman and Laramie. On the Tradesman, you'll enjoy smart key ignition, traction control, and dual rear wheels as standard. On the Laramie, you'll get all of that plus an upgraded Alpine® sound system, a rear defroster, and a navigation system as standard. You can also look out for a variety of optional tow hitches on the Laramie, including a standard tow, gooseneck, or fifth-wheel hitch, depending on your needs.
The 2023 Ram 5500 comes with a number of sophisticated interior perks. On all trims, you can look out for seats with power adjustability, heaters, and A/C. Upholstery also comes in either cloth, leather, or vinyl, so you can have your pick comfort and style. Entertainment options are also aplenty, including Apple CarPlay®, Android Auto™, and Bluetooth® connectivity.
As a big work truck, it's assuring the Ram 5500 comes with a variety of driver aids. Look out for parking sensors, lane departure warning, and a rearview camera as optional features available. Automated cruise control is also available on the Laramie trim. With a twelve-inch touchscreen display with split-screen capability features available upfront, toggling between entertainment and navigation is a seamless experience.
