If you know Ram for anything, it's trucks. And if you're looking for a vehicle that prioritizes towing, it would be hard to go wrong with the Ram 5500. First introduced back in 2011, the 2022 Ram 5500 brings with it a decade-plus of innovation. With two trims available (Limited and Laramie) and two powertrain options to consider, the 2022 Ram 5500 doesn't sacrifice the details. Indeed, new on the 2022 model are a number of driver aids and entertainment perks that give this work truck an air of luxury.
1. Multiple powertrain options
There are two different engine setups to consider on the 2022 Ram 5500: a 6.4L HEMI® 370-horsepower V8 engine; and a 6.7L Cummins 360-horsepower V6 engine. The first key difference between the two, as you might have noticed, is the cylinders and fuel style (diesel versus regular gas). The general rule is the more cylinders, the more horsepower, and thus towing capacity. That being said, if you don't need that extra oomph, the V6 will offer slightly better fuel economy, stability, and economy.
The other key difference to consider between the two powertrains on the 2022 Ram 5500 is the fuel style. The bigger HEMI V8 engine is a regular gas engine, while the slightly larger Cummins V6 engine is a turbodiesel setup. Diesel produces more force at lower RPM, which means more torque, specifically 800 lb-ft of it (versus the HEMI's 429 lb-ft). Practically, that translates into an estimated 35,130 lbs of towing capacity on the V6 turbo diesel (versus an estimated 18,870 lbs on the V8 gasoline), when properly equipped.
Starting in 2022, Ram consolidated the Ram 5500 down from a dizzying four trims to two. That might seem like a sacrifice, but the two trims available are bedecked with all the essential features. On the Laramie trim, you'll find driver aids like cruise control and traction control as standard. And if that's not enough, you should consider the Limited trim, which comes with everything the Laramie has plus parking sensors, remote start, and a rearview camera.
The 2022 Ram 5500 comes with a number of exciting entertainment perks and driver aids which together work towards an immersive ride. Parking sensors, lane departure warning, smart key, and remote start are all available on select trims, which make for cozier, more seamless cabin experience.
Considering the Ram 5500 is a work truck, Ram hasn't sacrificed on the interior. There's seating for six (when using the bench seat upfront), and you'll find a cozy 40.9 inches of legroom in the front and a huge 40.2 inches in the back. There's also a twelve-inch reconfigurable touchscreen display with split-screen capability available, so all passengers can easily keep track of what song's playing and how long until you arrive.
