The Scion iM was an all-new model for 2016 and added a sporty-looking hatchback to the Scion lineup. Built on the same platform as its Toyota Corolla sibling, the iM offered sharp styling that gave the impression of delivering better performance than the less exciting Corolla. But looks can be deceiving; in reality, the iM’s performance did not live up to its dynamic looks. The iM was only offered for one year because the Scion brand was discontinued the following year, but the car itself lived on as the Toyota Corolla iM.
Scion offered the iM as a single trim, and it came well equipped with upscale features like dual-zone automatic climate control, a digital driver display, a seven-inch touchscreen display, and Bluetooth® connectivity. Available exclusively with a 137-horsepower engine, the compact Scion is relatively slow accelerating to 60 mph. The lack of performance made it difficult for the iM to compete with stronger models like the Mazda3, Volkswagen Golf, or Ford Focus.
Interior: With soft-touch surfaces throughout the cabin, the Scion iM has an interior with an upscale vibe. Features like dual-zone climate control, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, cruise control, and a rearview camera are more commonly found on higher-end vehicles. The front seats offer good padding with support that keeps them comfortable during long-distance treks.
Fuel efficiency: The Scion iM delivers good fuel economy from its 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine. According to the EPA, the 2016 Scion iM with the automatic transmission returns 31 mpg on the combined cycle. Numbers drop by 1 mpg with the manual gearbox.
Technology: The nicely integrated seven-inch touchscreen display is easy to read with an intuitive menu design. In addition, the iM comes with a six-speaker audio system with HD radio, USB streaming, Bluetooth phone connectivity, and Aha streaming internet radio. GPS navigation is an available option, as is interior ambient lighting.
Performance: The Scion iM’s small four-cylinder engine is too underpowered to give this compact hatchback the performance to match its looks. Acceleration is very slow—according to the Edmunds review of the iM, the Scion takes 10 seconds to reach 60 mph, making it one of the slowest vehicles in its segment.
