With standard all-wheel drive, the 2023 Impreza compact sedan and hatchback deliver all-weather grip

Because every 2023 Subaru Impreza comes standard with all-wheel drive, it’s one of the most affordable ways to get the additional traction AWD brings. Next to competitors, only the Mazda3 also offers all-wheel drive, with the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, and others front-wheel-drive only.

A five-speed manual transmission is available on the base sedan and the base or Sport trim hatchback. Both the manual and the automatic transmission that's available across the lineup make the most of the 152-horsepower four-cylinder engine, but acceleration takes patience, especially at highway passing speeds. The ride is nicely controlled, however, and the handling is crisp and accurate.

While the Impreza’s cabin is pretty basic, everything is logically placed and getting comfortable with the controls takes only a minute or two. A 6.5-inch infotainment screen is standard, with an eight-inch screen on upper trims. Both come with Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™. If cargo space is a top priority then the hatchback’s 20 or so cubic feet far exceeds the 12.3-cubic-foot trunk in the sedan.

5 reasons to buy the 2023 Subaru Impreza

What We Like

All-wheel drive: It’s standard on every one of the Impreza’s four trim levels. This could seal the deal for budget-minded car shoppers who want a no-nonsense vehicle capable of coping with roads that turn slick with rain or snow.

Straightforward infotainment system: Like the rest of the Impreza’s cabin, the infotainment system is functional and easy to use. While the standard 6.5-inch screen is on the smaller side, it has clear menus and concise commands, not to mention standard smartphone connectivity.

Cargo toting: The five-door hatchback is an excellent means of getting SUV-like trunk volume in a smaller, less expensive vehicle. There is around 20 cubic feet of space behind the second row and more than 55 cubic feet with the split rear seatback folded down.

What Needs Improvement

Engine performance: The 152-hp four-cylinder gets the job done, but only barely. Acceleration is definitely not a bragging point with the Impreza. Highway passing takes lots of patience, and engine whine is an issue, especially with the automatic transmission.
