2022 Toyota C-HR provides affordable utility with sporty looks

The C-HR is about the same size as a subcompact hatchback, but it is called a crossover SUV. By any name, what you get with the C-HR is an affordable and nimble small car well suited to urban driving. What you don't get is engine power, as the C-HR is famously slow. Also, SUV buyers may expect all-wheel drive to be available, but the C-HR is strictly a front-wheel-drive vehicle.

None of those things are unusual in the subcompact SUV class. The competing Nissan Kicks and Kia Soul are also FWD-only. Other competitors including the Honda HR-V and Chevrolet Trax do offer AWD on some trims. Still, the C-HR is known for its agile handling and for being an affordable way to get into a good-looking small SUV.

Inside, the C-HR offers a comfortable interior with well-bolstered front seats. The rear seats are large enough to accommodate adults, and the C-HR is easy to get into and out of.

Interior road noise is higher than usual, and cargo space is adequate at 19 cubic feet, which translates to about 24 bags of groceries, or one good trip to the big-box store. Above all, the C-HR is economical, with EPA estimates of 27 mpg city and 31 mpg highway. Fuel economy figures are based on EPA estimates for when vehicle sold as new. Fuel economy may vary for reasons like driving conditions and vehicle history. Unless specified, figures are for vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission. See fueleconomy.gov.

5 reasons to buy the 2022 Toyota C-HR

What We Like

  • Nimble handling: As a small SUV, the C-HR is easy to park and navigate in tight urban settings. The C-HR is eager to go around corners and offers good visibility. For a driver in an urban area where 0-60 mph acceleration is not even possible, the C-HR can be a good choice.

  • Modern styling: The C-HR is a good-looking vehicle for younger buyers. It's got four doors for easy access to the back seat and a big hatch for the cargo area. This crossover looks faster than it really is, and with the wheels set out at the corners of the vehicle, this is an SUV with some swagger.

  • Technology: Toyota gives the C-HR an eight-inch touchscreen with support for both Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto phone integration. The 2022 C-HR comes with Toyota's suite of driver-assistance features, which includes adaptive cruise control.

What Needs Improvement

  • Low engine power: Even by the standards of subcompacts, the C-HR is known for being sluggish. The lack of engine power may be a deal-breaker on an otherwise nice subcompact SUV.
