The Toyota Crown is new to the U.S. but has a deep history in Japan as one of Toyota's longest-running models. The Crown replaces the Toyota Avalon, but it isn't quite as big as a large sedan since it has less rear legroom and cargo space than the Avalon. The Crown has a few unique features that set it apart from other sedans. It is taller and sits higher than a traditional sedan, comes standard with all-wheel drive, and is only available as a hybrid. Similar vehicles to consider would be the Volkswagen Arteon and Subaru Legacy, though they can't compete with the Crown's fuel economy. Closer matches would be the older Avalon Hybrid or the Lexus ES 300h.
Two hybrid engines are available depending on the trim level. The XLE and Limited trim gets an EPA-estimated 41 mpg in mixed driving. The Platinum trim has a more powerful hybrid engine, but you'll give up 11 mpg, compared to the XLE. Other highlights include a comfortable ride, a quiet cabin, and a comprehensive suite of driver aids. Fuel economy figures are based on EPA estimates for when vehicle sold as new. Actual mileage will vary based on things like battery age, vehicle condition and history, driving and charging habits, accessory use, and driving conditions. Battery capacity may decrease with time and use. See fueleconomy.gov for more info.
Comfortable ride: The Platinum trim includes an adaptive suspension that automatically adjusts ride comfort. This suspension provides an excellent ride over a variety of surfaces. The softest settings work best for dealing with some of the worst road surfaces, and even the sportier settings feel cushy.
Impressive technology: The Crown comes standard with a 12.3-inch touchscreen that is quick to respond, and the voice recognition has significantly improved from previous offerings. You can now adjust climate control settings with voice commands. There's also a 360-degree camera on the Platinum trim that has a neat trick of making the car invisible on screen to allow for a clearer view of your surroundings.
Enjoyable to drive: The more powerful of the two hybrid drivetrains offers plenty of power and feels sportier than you might expect. It’s paired with a traditional automatic, compared to the continuously variable transmission used on the lower two trim levels, which helps shifts feel smoother and more refined.
Seat comfort: Some may find it difficult to find a comfortable seating position, due to upright seatbacks, a limited range of lumbar support, and a higher-than-usual seating height. It is a similar story for the rear seats, where some may also find the seatback's comfort lacking and there is less rear legroom than you might expect from a large-looking sedan.
