2019 Toyota Highlander Hybrid is the last of its generation

If you want a combination of V6 power with hybrid fuel economy, the 2019 Toyota Highlander Hybrid is a great choice. The 3.5-liter gas-fueled V6 engine and electric motor yield 306 total system horsepower and they return 28-29 EPA-estimated mpg in combined city and highway driving. Fuel economy figures are based on EPA estimates for when vehicle sold as new. Actual mileage will vary based on things like battery age, vehicle condition and history, driving and charging habits, accessory use, and driving conditions. Battery capacity may decrease with time and use. See fueleconomy.gov for more info. Another point of strength is that all-wheel drive is standard on the 2019 models.

Inside the Highlander Hybrid, you get seating for eight people in the standard configuration with a second-row bench seat, or seating for seven with the available captain's chairs in the second row.

As a family vehicle, driver-assistance technology is critical for the Highlander Hybrid, and Toyota gave the 2019 model year adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assistance, a precollision system with pedestrian detection, and automatic high beams. There were three trim levels available with the Hybrid in this model year, and it was the last year with the V6 engine.

5 reasons to buy the 2019 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

What We Like

  • Good fuel economy: The Highlander Hybrid offers about 7 mpg more than the standard Highlander

, with very little downside. The interior space of the SUV is the same, and the perceived engine power is about the same. All-wheel drive is standard, which makes the Highlander Hybrid an excellent choice in all climates.

  • Good engine power: With 306 horsepower on tap between the V6 engine and the electric motor, the Highlander Hybrid has plenty of power to climb hills or cruise on the freeway. The continuously variable transmission is optimized to make the best use of the power, distributing it to all four wheels for maximum traction.

  • Driver assistance: As a family vehicle, the Highlander Hybrid is equipped to stop accidents before they happen. Adaptive cruise control follows the prevailing traffic speeds, while features like lane keeping assistance and precollision braking are always active and helping the driver manage traffic.

What Needs Improvement

  • No support for smartphone connectivity: Toyota was late to the game with interoperability, instead supporting its own Entune system after most of the industry had made smartphone integration primary. Paired with a touchscreen that's sometimes difficult to reach, the infotainment system is the weak point of the 2019 Toyota Highlander Hybrid.
