The Toyota Tacoma has built its reputation upon its off-road prowess. This has been further accentuated with trims like TRD Off-Road and the legendary TRD Pro version, which equips the Tacoma with a lift kit, skid plates for underbody protection, and improved suspension for tackling rough terrain. For 2019, Toyota added the option of an available desert air intake kit as well as a standard JBL® sound system and moonroof on the TRD Pro trim. If you want to tackle more than paved roads—or give the appearance that you do—the Tacoma TRD Pro accomplishes this without breaking a sweat.
The pickup truck is one of the most versatile platforms out there, especially with the popularity of four-door crew cab models. While large half-ton and larger pickups may be the strong workhorses of the world, the midsize Tacoma makes for a capable and maneuverable vehicle fit for many different lifestyles. With a payload of up to 1,505 lbs and towing capacities topping out at an estimated 6,800 lbs (when properly equipped) with the V6 and optional tow package, the Tacoma is plenty capable.
While it would be easy to believe you need a larger half-ton pickup for your daily life, living with the midsize Tacoma may surprise you with its maneuverability and fuel economy when also considering full-size options. With the optional 3.5L V6, the Tacoma can achieve an EPA-estimated 24 mpg on the highway, while the standard 2.7L engine gets 23 mpg under the same conditions (both in the two-wheel drive configuration).
The most unique and distinguishing feature of Tacoma is its composite bed. With the truck bed doing the dirty work, it is nice to know that tossing in tools, gravel, or bikes won't scratch paint and lead to metal-destroying rust. This composite bed is lighter than steel alternatives and includes a two-tier storage system through its molded bedsides for increased capacity and flexibility. Toyota even offers an available 120V/400W power point, further extending the bed's usefulness.
The 2019 Toyota Tacoma packs in the latest tech into all trims, with a 6.1-inch color touchscreen infotainment standard on all grades. Top trims receive the optional JBL sound system that includes a larger seven-inch screen, six speakers, and a subwoofer with an amplifier. Opting for the Premium & Technology package adds features including dual-zone climate control and heated front seats among other upscale touches. Toyota also includes its TSS-P systems that contain stability control, traction control, and anti-lock brakes on all trims.
