The 2022 Volkswagen Arteon comes packed with standard features and—new for 2022—an upgraded engine. The midsize sedan also got a new transmission for 2022 along with making the stylish R-Line design standard. It was no slouch before receiving these upgrades, but the Arteon is now a serious competitor against the likes of the Kia Stinger and Audi A5 Sportback.
Its new turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine generates 300 horsepower, more than enough power for most buyers, and its new transmission allows for more spirited driving. The Arteon is more fun to drive than it was a year ago, and the hatchback's roomy interior ensures that it's still plenty practical. With the rear seats folded down, the Volkswagen offers 56.2 cu-ft of storage space.
Tech remains a bit of a mixed bag for the Arteon. Wireless Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ come standard, but the standard infotainment is a bit clunky and difficult to use. Volkswagen's implementation of adaptive cruise control is too sensitive, making for a jerky experience.
Performance: The new engine and transmission greatly improve the experience of driving the Arteon. The Volkswagen now posts zero to 60 mph times that are comparable to sport-oriented sedans like the Kia K5 GT, and it does so smoothly thanks to the new transmission.
Comfort: A roomy interior gives passengers plenty of room to stretch out, while comfortable seats make long drives pleasant. Headroom in the back row is a little compromised because of the sloping roof, but ride quality is generally pleasant.
Storage: The hatchback design offers loads of storage space behind the second row and folding that row down greatly increases room for larger items. That back row is also very roomy for installing car seats.
Tech: The infotainment system is clunky, difficult to use and menu heavy. Wireless Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ come standard, but connecting to the central screen can take a few tries.
