The 2022 Ram ProMaster City is a small car-based van ideal for cargo or passengers

The 2022 Ram ProMaster City is a small van that can be configured for hauling cargo or passengers, offering excellent utility with a small footprint. More maneuverable and easier to drive than a full-size van, the ProMaster City is an ideal size for a small business or shuttle service. But with few amenities or creature comforts, the ProMaster City is better suited for work than as a family transport. Ram simplified the lineup for the 2022 model year, offering a base-level van configured for cargo or as a five-passenger van.

ProMaster City offers one engine, a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine delivering 178 horsepower, which provides adequate performance and good fuel efficiency. The ProMaster City has some strong competition from other small commercial vans, including the Ford Transit Connect and Mercedes-Benz Metris.

5 reasons to buy the 2022 Ram Promaster City

What We Like

  • Utility: It may be small compared to the more common full-size commercial van, but the Ram ProMaster City still brings plenty of utility. The cargo version can haul 1,890 pounds

or carry up to 132 cubic feet of cargo, while the passenger variant will carry five passengers. Loading the ProMaster City is made easy thanks to rear doors that open 180 degrees as well as a low liftover height.

  • Performance: The Ram ProMaster City comes standard with a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine putting out 178 horsepower and 174 lb-ft of torque, teamed with a nine-speed automatic transmission. Power is more than adequate for this small van, and the ProMaster City can tow up to 2,000 pounds, when properly equipped. Ride quality and handling are also reasonable for a utility-focused hauler, that is.

  • Fuel efficiency: An additional advantage to this small commercial van compared to larger offerings is fuel efficiency. The 2022 Ram ProMaster City manages an EPA fuel economy estimate of 24 mpg combined. These figures are even slightly better than those for the Ram’s chief rival, the Ford Transit Connect.

What Needs Improvement

  • Technology: With just the base trim available for the 2022 model year, the ProMaster City misses out on most high-tech amenities. No driver-assist features are offered, and the infotainment system presented on a five-inch display is dated with no option for Android Auto  or Apple CarPlay®.
