If you’re looking for a rugged vehicle with practical storage space but want an alternative to an SUV, consider the V60 Cross Country wagon. Although it’s not technically an off-road vehicle, with 8.3 inches of ground clearance and all-wheel drive, the Cross Country is ready for rough trails and inclement weather. It offers some of the pluses of an SUV, like good visibility and cargo space, without the bulk. Fuel economy is more sedan-like, with an EPA-estimated combined 25 mpg (22 city/31 highway). Fuel economy figures are based on EPA estimates for when vehicle sold as new. Fuel economy may vary for reasons like driving conditions and vehicle history. Unless specified, figures are for vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission. See fueleconomy.gov. If you’re heading for a campsite or traveling in winter, the surefooted V60 Cross Country is well equipped to get you there and back again.
There’s a reason it’s called the Cross Country. It can handle a two-track dirt road to a cabin off the beaten path or help you navigate through a winter storm. It’s not set up for full-throttle off-roading but can handle some exploration beyond the pavement. The standard off-road mode complements the standard all-wheel drive. It works at 25 mph and below to prepare the car for traction on slippery surfaces. The hill descent control uses the braking system to slow the car on steep inclines automatically. The standard turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder engine mated to an eight-speed automatic propels the Cross Country for rough terrain excursions and highway driving.
You’re not alone when you’re behind the wheel of a Cross Country. Volvo’s standard advanced assist features are there when you need them. The Pilot Assist adaptive cruise control helps you keep the car in the middle of the lane and can even follow lane markings as the road curves. When engaged, it automatically adjusts the cruise control speed to keep the same distance to the car in front. Also, there’s a blind-spot information system with steering assist and cross-traffic alert with Autobrake. An available 360-degree camera takes the guesswork out of parking.
The V60 Cross Country offers the utility of an SUV with the handling and size of a sedan. It has four seats and an ample rear cargo area with 23.3 cu-ft of storage with the rear seats upright. With the seats folded, the cargo space expands to 50.9 cu-ft. The rear seats accommodate adults or a child seat with ease.
There’s only one trim level for the V60 Cross Country, so the list of standard features is long. Starting with the exterior, you’ll see 18-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights and fog lights, a panoramic moonroof, and roof rails. Inside, you'll get leather seats, a 12.3-inch digital driver display, heated front seats, a memory driver’s seat, and wireless charging. The 9-inch vertical screen infotainment system features Android Auto™ and Apple CarPlay® connectivity, and navigation.
If you want an extra-special Cross Country, three option packages are available. The Climate Package adds features for cold-weather drivers, including heated back seats and a heated steering wheel. The Advanced Package adds driver assist and convenience features, including a head-up display, a 360-degree camera, a 12V power outlet in the cargo area, and the Pilot Assist driver assistance system with adaptive cruise control. The Lounge Package adds luxury appointments with Nappa leather seats, cooled front seats, four-zone automatic climate control, and a tailored dashboard.
