The 2021 Volvo V90 is a station wagon with style to spare

From back in the day, you may remember Volvo’s iconic square-shaped station wagons. Known for being practical, safe, and often beige, they were the automotive equivalent of oatmeal. The V90 keeps all the strengths of the wagons that made Volvo famous and ditches the boring look for a sleek and modern design, brisk acceleration, a minimalist yet premium interior, and lots of driver aid technology. This is every inch a modern luxury car, but with the added utility of an SUV-sized trunk. It’s also available in a slightly more rugged (and SUV-like) style, which is sold as the V90 Cross Country. The biggest issue with the V90 is its limited availability, with Volvo largely focusing on sales of the V90 Cross Country. If you can find one, the V90’s biggest weakness is the steep learning curve and sometimes frustrating response times of the infotainment touchscreen, which unfortunately houses the controls for quite a few of the vehicle’s systems.

5 reasons to buy the 2021 Volvo V90

What We Like

Design and materials: Compared to traditional luxury options, Volvo’s minimalist design language and use of premium materials makes the V90 a compelling option. The car’s comfort and driving experience complement that upscale feel.

Station wagon practicality: With almost 20 cu-ft of cargo space behind the rear seats, and almost 70 cu-ft with them folded down, the XC90 rivals some SUVs when it comes to cargo hauling duties.

Driver aids: The V90 comes with a full suite of standard driver aids, unlike a lot of German competitors. An automated park-assist feature and surround view camera are optional extras, but even adaptive cruise control is included on all 2021 V90 trims.

What Needs Improvement

Touchscreen controls: Volvo’s touchscreen interface has a confusing menu structure and isn’t as responsive to inputs as some competitors. It’s especially frustrating because a lot of vehicle systems are controlled through the touchscreen.
