That the 2014 Volvo XC90 has gone 11 years since its debut without a redesign underlines Volvo's success with its original take on a seven-seat upscale SUV. Rivals such as the Acura MDX and Infiniti QX60 have since been introduced, caught up, and surpassed the big, comfortable XC90. 2014 is the last year of this generation, though, with an all-new model starting in 2016. That does mean the 2014 XC90 feels dated, with an outdated infotainment system and a notable absence of the latest driver-assist and convenience features—things you'll find elsewhere in the Volvo lineup (and competitors) for 2014.
The XC90 lineup is limited to two models, both powered by a 3.2-liter six-cylinder engine. Even the entry-level 3.2 model has a long list of standard equipment, including alloy wheels, leather upholstery, rear parking sensors, dual-zone climate control, 40/20/20-split folding second-row seats, and a 50/50-split third-row seat. The XC90 doesn't exactly excite on the road. It's perfectly adequate, but opt for the sharper-looking R-Design model because its sportier suspension tightens up the handling without detracting much from ride comfort. This year marks a fond farewell to the first generation of a family favorite SUV.
With seating for up to seven passengers across three rows, the 2014 Volvo XC90 is perfectly suited to transporting you and your crew around town and beyond on a daily basis. It offers a total of 100.9 cu-ft of passenger volume, with 41.0 inches of front seat legroom, 36.4 inches of second-row legroom, and 30.1 inches of third-row legroom. If you have a young family, there's a full set of LATCH child-seat connectors on the second-row outboard seats, as well as an upper tether attachment and a built-in booster seat in the middle of the second row.
The 2014 Volvo XC90's interior isn't just versatile and spacious but also packed with premium features. Even base 3.2 models offer creature comforts like a sunroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, leather upholstery, and an eight-speaker sound system as standard. Additionally, the Platinum package adds a 12-speaker surround-sound system, while the Climate package includes heated front seats. There are also standalone options including enhanced leather upholstery and a dual-display rear seat entertainment system to keep everyone occupied during even the longest journeys.
It's not just on the inside that the 2014 Volvo XC90 excels with its selection of features. Base 3.2 models are well-equipped as standard, with features like rear parking sensors, foglights and an eight-way power front seat all included. On the premium R-Design trim, you also get features like sports-tuned suspension and steering, a fold-flat front passenger seat, and a universal garage door opener. Option packages can also add equipment like a navigation system, a rearview camera, heated front seats, and a blind-spot warning system.
All 2014 Volvo XC90 models feature a 3.2L inline six-cylinder engine, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission, producing 240 horsepower and 236 lb-ft of torque. All models are offered in the front-wheel-drive configuration as standard, with all-wheel drive available across the range for added road holding and grip when the surface gets rough. And importantly, that 3.2L powerplant combo is also relatively frugal, with an EPA-estimated 24 mpg on the highway in front-wheel-drive form.
If you've ever wanted a comfortable family car that can also be a rugged adventure vehicle when you want it to be, the 2014 Volvo XC90 is uniquely equipped for this purpose. The available all-wheel drive across the range allows you to explore mild off-road trails with ease, and should you want to tow something along with you, the 2014 Volvo XC90 can than handle that too. Front-wheel-drive models with the 3.2L engine allow for an estimated maximum towing capacity of 3,970 lbs and that figure jumps up to an estimated max of 4,960 lbs on models with all-wheel-drive (both when properly equipped).
RepairPal gave the Volvo XC90 an overall reliability rating of 3.5 out of 5 stars, which RepairPal describes as Above Average. This rating ranks Volvo XC90 17th out of 29 among Luxury Midsize SUVs.
