Sporty performance and a comfortable ride in the 2022 Audi SQ5

The SQ5 is Audi’s sport-tuned version of its popular Q5 crossover, with the addition of a stiffer suspension and larger wheels. Plus, the SQ5’s 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 produces 349 horsepower, significantly more than the 201 hp from the four-cylinder in a standard Q5.

The 2022 SQ5 carries over the styling and technology updates from the 2021 model, which included a face-lift and a better infotainment system. For 2022, carbon-fiber trim was added as a standard adornment, and everything else stayed the same, including the sleek SQ5 Sportback body style.

As a whole, the SQ5 manages to offer both performance and luxury, and it keeps up with rivals like the sleek Porsche Macan, energetic BMW X3 M40i, and plush Mercedes-Benz GLC43 AMG. It proves that SUVs can be fun to drive without sacrificing comfort and cargo space.

What We Like

Comfort: Cushy, sculpted, heated leather seats are enhanced by supportive side bolsters. Optional packages with amenities like ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, and a heated steering wheel can be added to the Premium Plus and Prestige trims. Between the shape of the seats and the high-quality materials, the comfort factor is hard to beat. Plus, the generous dimensions give front and rear passengers plenty of elbow room.

Interior: Like all Audis, the SQ5 has a design language that is future-forward and sleek. However, the brand is conscientious about keeping it simple and not trying too hard to seem modern. The physical controls make sense, and the cabin layout is thoughtful, with well-placed rearview and side mirrors. The SQ5 thankfully is fitted with tall door openings. The large windows provide excellent outward visibility and make it feel like there's more headroom than there actually is.

Performance: If Audi’s Q5 is satisfyingly smooth, the SQ5 adds a little spice to the mix with more power and even better handling. The brakes depress firmly and easily, and the SUV handles with the agility of a smaller car. In Comfort mode, the SQ5 does most of the work, making parking and easing into traffic a breeze.

What Needs Improvement

Technology: While wireless Apple CarPlay® smartphone integration comes standard, Edmunds' testing found connection difficulties. The SQ5 is equipped with voice activation controls for the infotainment system, but the system is finicky and requires strict adherence to its patterns. Surprisingly, keyless entry and ignition are only available as an add-on with the Convenience package.
