The 2018 BMW M2 is a faster, more agile version of the brand’s 2 Series. It’s an upgrade that’s very much in line with the M2’s eager enthusiasm for track driving and penchant for twisty roads. For even more performance, an available M Driver’s package raises the speed limiter from 155 mph to 174 mph.
Equipped with a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine, a sport-tuned chassis, wider and grippier tires than the 2 Series, and bigger brakes, the M2 is the older, stronger sibling to the 2 Series’ calm daily driver proclivities. The M2 holds its own against high-end cars like the Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 and Audi RS 3. It’s absolutely acceptable to adopt an M2 as a daily driver and still wring it out on the weekends at a local track. You might want to keep it forever.
Storage: With a 13.8-cubic-foot cargo capacity and a low, wide trunk opening, the M2 is more spacious and convenient than its exterior lets on. The rear seats are set up in a 60/40 split, which increases capacity even more when there are no backseat passengers. Small storage options include door pockets, a center-console bin, cupholders, and a glove box.
Performance: Graced with a turbo 3.0-liter inline-six with a good-natured growl, the M2 has 365 horsepower and it’s a blast to drive. This compact car can zip from 0 to 60 mph in 4 seconds with the automatic transmission and 4.2 seconds in the manual version. Handling is exemplary on the road and the track, responsive and nimble.
Interior: The 2018 M2 may start with the bones of the 2 Series’ interior, but the M2 has its own personality. Interior materials are largely high-quality, featuring leather and faux suede. Blue contrasting stitching and M badges upgrade the cabin feel, and the dash is streamlined and modern. Infotainment features are displayed on a clear 8.8-inch screen and run through a premium audio system.
Comfort: Alas, the M2 proves you can’t have it all. It has power, speed, and agility, and the creature comforts in the cabin are current and sleek. Even the seats are fairly well cushioned and bolstered to hold you in place around sharp turns. Unfortunately, the stiff ride overshadows the rest of the M2’s attributes, trading comfort for performance. Road noise can be intrusive at times, especially on less-than-ideal roads.
