BMW M cars are the highest-performing automobiles in the German company's portfolio, and the M2 is arguably the purest of them all. With a powerful engine, rear-wheel drive, and a manual gearbox, the M2 has exactly what a car enthusiast would look for in a car. Based on the BMW 2 Series, the M2 has styling that sets it apart from the standard model, but it's not overly flamboyant, making this high-performance model a bit less noticeable. BMW offers the 2021 M2 in a single trim level: the M2 Competition. With a 405-horsepower twin-turbo six-cylinder engine teamed with a standard six-speed manual transmission, the M2 is very quick. While there aren't many options for the M2, consumers could choose to swap the manual for a six-speed dual-clutch gearbox. As a specialized performance machine, the M2 is not for everyone, but there are other
Performance: As a small car with a powerful 405 horsepower, the BMW M2 is quick —BMW says it will reach 60 mph in just 4 seconds. With precise steering, a sport suspension, and strong brakes, the M2 comes into its own on a winding road. But with a stiff chassis, the M2 can require a practiced hand to explore its limits as the ride can get twitchy on rougher roads.
Interior: The BMW M2's interior may seem a bit plain considering the price of the vehicle, but its straightforward design is quite functional. The seats are stylish with adjustable bolsters that provide excellent support, and the M2 is easier to get in and out of than a typical low-slung sports car. The rear seat is usable, but adults will find the space rather constricting for a longer trip.
Value: As the entry point into the BMW M lineup, the M2 delivers impressive performance at a price considerably lower than other M cars as well as competitors with similar performance. With practically no options available, the powerful motor, strong brakes, and performance-oriented interior all come standard.
Technology: The 2021 BMW M2 is the last of the car's first generation, and because of this, the technology is a bit dated. Apple CarPlay® is supported, but Android Auto™ integration is unavailable, and the infotainment system's menus can be confusing. Adaptive cruise control and rear cross-traffic warning are not offered on the M2.
