Any BMW with an M designation is a vehicle that's focused on high performance. With few exceptions, these are variants of more traditional models in the BMW lineup, but with added power, improved handling, and styling that calls out the vehicle's added performance. The M2 is the lowest-priced M car that BMW offers, but “entry-level” is not a term appropriate for this vehicle. Based on the recently redesigned BMW 2 Series, the M2 boasts a powerful engine, rear-wheel drive, and a standard six-speed manual gearbox. Offered as a single trim, the BMW M2 is a two-door, four-seat sport coupe that boasts a turbocharged engine putting out 453 horsepower. Redesigned for the 2023 model year, the new M2 is a bit heavier than its predecessor, but with its added power, the sport coupe delivers the performance expected of an M car. Not only is the M2 quick, it handles well and is a joy to drive on a twisty road.
Performance: With a powerful engine under the hood sending power to the rear wheels via a manual transmission, the M2 checks the most important boxes for a sport coupe. Slightly heavier than the outgoing model, the 2023 M2 can still reach 60 mph in less than 4 seconds. With a stiff suspension and excellent grip, the M2 delivers a confident ride, whether on a relaxing drive or when carving up a mountain road.
Technology: While some may miss the previous version's analog gauges, the 2023 M2 features a high-tech cabin with a large curved screen that houses a 14.9-inch infotainment display and driver's display. The infotainment system uses the iDrive 8 operating system, which is intuitive to use with easy navigation. System interaction can also be done via the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, a natural language voice interface.
Interior: Befitting the M2's performance characteristics, the interior features stylish sport seats that are heated and trimmed in perforated leather. The headrests are adorned with an illuminated M logo. The seats are a bit tight with substantial bolstering, but ultimately they offer good comfort and support. The rear seat is not as small as those in some other sport coupes, but realistically this is a two-passenger car, with a rear seat for occasional use only.
Fuel efficiency: Consumers don't typically purchase an M car for its fuel efficiency since performance is the car's central focus. With either the manual or automatic transmission, the M2 has an EPA estimate of 16 mpg in the city, although the highway rating is a bit more respectable at 24 mpg for the manual.
