BMW updated the plucky M2 performance coupe for model year 2019, giving the car an upgraded twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine, fresh seating, a restyled grille, and a new name for its single trim: M2 Competition.
Borrowing the engine from the BMW M3 and M4, the 2019 M2 is good for 405 hp. The German brand fortified the internal structure of the powerplant, upgrading the pistons and other components. The suspension, steering, and brakes are all calibrated to match, making the M2 a thrilling daily drive.
Yes, daily drive, because while drivers will appreciate the sublime handling, they’ll also be cradled in the M2’s supple, heated leather sport seats. A 12-speaker audio system cranks out your favorite tunes with clarity, and it’s connected to an infotainment system that includes an 8.8-inch central display with navigation.
Interior: Ample headroom helps the compact M2 feel larger than it is, and a high seating position amplifies the overall feeling of spaciousness. Carbon-fiber trim provides a modern accent to the leather upholstery. The Executive package adds a heated steering wheel and wireless phone charger. Overall, the M2’s cabin is simply laid out and generally hassle-free.
Storage: The M2’s trunk can hold 13.8 cubic feet, which is plenty for a big grocery run or weekend getaway. Small storage options include a center-console storage bin for stashing snacks or smartphones, and there is also door pocket storage and a lockable glove box for valuables.
Performance: The 2019 M2 is powered by a twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder making 405 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque. Those who like to shift their own gears will appreciate that the M2 is equipped as standard with a six-speed manual transmission. Others will be glad to find a seven-speed automatic transmission as an option. The M Driver’s package is a nice addition, raising the speed limiter from 155 mph to 174 mph.
Comfort: A smooth track is the M2’s happy place, and it tolerates typical daily roads. The downside to the quick and supremely agile handling of the M2 is its tendency toward an overly firm ride. Thankfully, the seats offer plenty of padding and supportive side bolsters — you’ll need them on any road with imperfections.
