This Chevy SUV is worth a look if you appreciate a smooth ride and an intuitive, easy-to-use infotainment system. It also offers a ton of optional extras. It’s important to know that feature availability varies a lot more for the Equinox than some competitors, so finding the features you want may be a bit more complicated. For example, while forward collision alert with automatic emergency braking was standard equipment, adaptive cruise control was part of an option package for mid-level (LT and above) trims.
For 2022, Chevy refreshed the Equinox, tweaking the exterior and interior looks, adding more optional tech features, making driver-aid options packages available for lower trim levels, and adding a new RS trim that offers sportier looks. Unfortunately, the only available engine delivers lackluster performance–you’ll have to go back to 2020 to get a power upgrade in the form of a turbocharged engine.
Smooth ride: The Chevy Equinox does a good job soaking up bumps in the road and offers a smooth ride on most surfaces. It also feels very stable, rather than overly soft or floaty. That’s a real strength, especially for any passengers who are prone to queasiness.
Easy infotainment: Two touchscreens are available, and both feature crisp displays with snappy response times. The menus are structured logically, and large buttons are easy to press. There’s not much of a learning curve, so the infotainment is friendly for new owners.
Convenience upgrades: The Equinox has a lot of different options packages, so there are a lot of nice upgrades to be found. For example, the Equinox can be equipped with a 120-volt household-style power outlet–a rare feature in the compact SUV class. Just note that the multitude of packages can make things a bit confusing.
Engine options: The Equinox used to offer multiple engine choices, including a more powerful gas engine and even a diesel with great highway mileage. Now, only the base engine remains, and neither its performance nor its fuel economy are particularly competitive.
