2017 - 2024
Third generation Land Rover Discovery
The Land Rover Discovery's fifth generation ditched the boxy look of the Land Rover LR4 it replaced with sleek and stylish lines. But that doesn’t mean it went soft, and under the modern skin is a thoroughly off-road-capable luxury SUV. It first debuted in 1989 as a smaller, lighter, and less expensive alternative to the Range Rover. Today’s Discovery has sleek, modern styling befitting Land Rover’s status as a luxury SUV maker, with an interior awash in the premium materials and modern technology one demands from a high-end brand.
But make no mistake, this Disco still knows how to dance off road. It shares its underpinnings with the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport, so it’s available with a two-speed transfer case and locking rear differential, both key for successfully navigating rough terrain.
There are a few downsides. The off-road suspension means ride quality isn’t quite as smooth as some of its less capable rivals (although it’s still pretty good), and early models used a touchscreen with a confusing interface. The interior, while comfortable, suffers from multiple areas where it’s hard to use or poorly thought out. And unfortunately, some owners have complained about technology glitches, and time spent in the shop.
Note: The Discovery is a distinct model from the Discovery Sport, which is smaller and more focused on on-road performance.
